A long history

The Brennan family
A story about family
The Brennan family, originally from Ireland, settled in New Zealand in 1877. Dr. Sir Murray Brennan, born in Auckland, later acquired land in Gibbston and planted vines in 1994, laying the foundation for Brennan Wines.
In 2006 after much study and developing his winemaking skills abroad, Sean Brennan moved permanently to Gibbston and started producing the Brennan's own wines.
"I was inspired by the potential of Gibbston as an outstanding wine growing region".
With a small start, Sean gradually established the winery earning world wide acclaim in the process. Joined by Emma Bennet in 2019, they continue to craft award-winning wines, combining science, art, and a touch of magic.

Our approach to wine
The Brennan Family vineyards are situated in the Gibbston sub region of Central Otago along the eastern end of the Gibbston Back Road. The site offers a unique variation of the soils and aspects typically found in the valley.
Plantings range over lower alluvial flats through to steeply sloping areas of lean, stony soils. This diversity through the vineyards is an instrumental factor in the development of layered complexity in the wines.
In addition to the soil and aspect of the site, the higher elevation of Gibbston compared to other wine regions in New Zealand, delays harvest a few more weeks allowing the main ripening period to happen in slightly cooler temperatures. This period helps to retain the aromatic qualities of our wines.

Our favourite winery in New Zealand! We love how the winery tries different things, be it growing grapes rarely seen in Central Otago, or different aging treatment. Lovely garden to enjoy your wine tasting in, and a gorgeous view of the vineyard.
